Bridges Reconstruction Programme
The Ministry of Works and Infrastructure plans to undertake a Bridges Reconstruction Programme (BRP) over a five year period with NIDCO appointed as the project executing agency. This programme is specifically aimed at the reconstruction of dilapidated or dysfunctional bridges located primarily along the Highway’s Division Road network throughout the various counties in Trinidad. To date, 62 Bridges have been identified as needing urgent reconstruction.
The programme is divided into various phases. In the first phase, 24 bridge projects as shown in location map are sub-divided into 2 Design Packages and 13 Construction Packages. The intention is to complete the design in third quarter of 2012 and to begin construction in the last quarter of 2012.
The Design-Bid-Build approach using the FIDIC 1999 Red Book is to be utilized for each bid package. However, the Design-Build approach will be retained as an option for large and / or complicated bridges in the next phases.
General Objectives of the Programme
- Reconstruct / Rehabilitate dilapidated or dysfunctional bridges including approach embankments as the cost effective way to provide adequate bridge / road capacity based on the latest National Standards and AASTHO code requirements.
- Enlargement of narrow bridges for safer travel for the public and to cater for road widening in the future.
- Minimize the environmental impact and disruption of vehicle and pedestrian traffic during construction.
- To finish the projects at the agreed schedules, within the approved budgets and at standard quality requirements.
Project Organization
The project is executed by NIDCO on behalf of the client, The Ministry of Works and Infrastructure. Two (2) Design and/or Supervision Consultants will prepare fully completed designs and thirteen (13) bid packages.
